"Bust magazine: you're BUSTED.
Guess what? They're going to start selling Bust in Urban Outfitters. If you didn't know already, the head of UO is a major conservative, who has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Senator Rick Santorum, the man responsible for the "partial birth abortion" myth and ensuing federal legislation which threatens to permanently reverse Roe v. Wade. Oh, and of course there's that whole sweatshop labor thing with UO.
Hey, maybe Bust would like to increase circulation by throwing some free copies into Curves fitness centers too, just so they could help make money for other rich men that want to strip women of their right to self-determination.
Write BUST and complain about what they're doing. Threaten to cancel your subscription if you have one.
Magazines make ALL their profits on advertising -- and their ad rates are based upon circulation, which is calculated by the number of subscriptions they have. That's why when someone I worked with here started his magazine, he offered free subscriptions to everyone he knew and their family members -- because those few hundred or thousand subscribers (even if unpaid) meant he could charge more for the advertising.
This is the last straw for me.
Bust just kept going down hill over the last few years, but I kept reading and hoping there was something redeeming in each progressively dumber, whiter, Bridget Jonesier issue... but making money for Urban Outfitters and rich white men who want to take away our rights? NO MORE BUST EVER."
Quotes 'cause I didn't write this, Kate did.

Date: 2004-04-29 07:57 am (UTC)I'm not quite sure what I think of Bust magazine, incidentally. I've read it a few times, and it's good that such a thing exists, but I'm not sure they're content is as good as their mission statement.

Date: 2004-04-29 09:15 am (UTC)Head of UO is a major conservative?
Suddenly that "ghettopoly" game and the antisemitic (tee hee, Jewish girls loooooooooove money, doncha get the joke? no? me neither!) T-shirts are looking a little more than hip, slick, and ironic.
Wow.

Date: 2004-04-29 12:42 pm (UTC)Spirituality trip. It should be fun. I'm kinda upset to hear (via weirdjews) that a lot of people plan on being sexually active and hooking up with others on the trip- it's really NOT what I want to be in the middle of with this. I guess I've just gotta cross my fingers.
I'm starting to get nervous, and am wondering what the heck to pack... meep!

Date: 2004-04-29 01:31 pm (UTC)As for feeling pressured by the "hooking up" thing, remember that Jewish ethics emphasize responsibility to ourselves and others. Sex without respect and responsibility isn't congruent with Jewish values and spirituality. Just do what's right for you - and don't get dragged into anything you're uncomfortable participating in. People should be able to understand that well enough.
Definitely pack a big, cool, light, longsleeved shirt.

Date: 2004-04-29 01:41 pm (UTC)I'm not so much worried about being pressured into hooking up with someone, as I am that my roommate at the hotel will want to fuck in the room or something. I just don't want to deal with it. I'll be missing Jeremy terribly while I'm there, and hearing/seeing people fucking just won't help much.
I'm definately packing mainly silk skirts and whatnot- I find they are cooler than anything else in the summer. I'm hunting for a sunblock that I don't have an allergic reaction to, not having a whole lot of luck. There are a few that I can wear for about 4 hours before I start to itch, but that's the best I've got so far. :(
